What Are Discussion Items?

Discussion items are flagged topics that your team needs to talk through, decide on, or solve. They ensure nothing important slips through the cracks between meetings.

In Workfacta, there are three types of discussions:

  • Opportunity - A positive chance to improve or grow.

  • Challenge - A risk, issue or problem to resolve.

  • General Discussion - Any matter requiring team discussion that doesn’t fit the other two.

When creating a discussion, select one of those options from the drop-down menu.

1. Opportunity

An Opportunity is something positive your business can act on: a new contract, customer expansion, process improvement or strategic win.

Use an Opportunity when:

  • Your team has identified a chance to grow or improve

  • You want to decide on how to capitalise on the opportunity and how best to act moving forward

  • You want the discussion recorded, tracked, and resolved in a meeting agenda

2. Challenge

A Challenge is an issue requiring attention: a performance drop, risk exposure, obstacle to progress, or anything that could derail results.

Use a Challenge when:

  • You spot something that is blocking progress or causing risk

  • You need to decide how to resolve it or mitigate it

  • You want to ensure it’s discussed, assigned and tracked until resolution

3. General Discussion

A General Discussion covers any topic that doesn’t neatly fit into Opportunity or Challenge but still needs the team’s attention - e.g., new ideas, policy reviews, or team alignment items.

Use this type when:

  • You want to discuss something important but it’s not currently a risk or an opportunity

  • You need team input or alignment

  • You want to ensure the topic appears in a meeting agenda and isn’t forgotten

Summary

By selecting the correct type of Discussion item, you ensure your meeting becomes more focused, accountable and aligned. Opportunities help you grow, Challenges help you solve problems and General Discussions help keep the team aligned on everything else.
